Natural Flea Killer

If you don’t want to use chemical based flea controls, there are natural flea killers and repellants you can use. The following are some of the natural methods available for getting rid of or keeping fleas away.

Herbal Flea Collars

These products come with various scents that can keep these pests away. The quality of the product will vary though. Ask your vet to be sure.

Diatomaceous Earth

This is a chemical free soil designed to kill not just fleas but other pesky insects. It comes with sharp edges that destroy the exoskeleton of the insect. The end result is the flea succumbs to dehydration.

The Diatomaceous earth is composed of fossils stemming from water plants. This makes it very safe to use. If it’s the rainy season, make sure to get bigger bags so you can add more when the rain washes it away. This natural flea killer can be used around your pet’s bedding without any side effects.

Flea Traps

These consist of a grid under which is glue. Place these in the areas the fleas frequent and they will get ensnared in it.

Drowning

You can drown the fleas by giving your pet a flea bath. You can kill a lot of fleas this way, but using a flea shampoo during the bath will make it even more effective.

If you are going to use a shampoo, start at the neck area so the pests don’t get to the head. Follow the product instructions on how long to keep the shampoo on.

Other Natural Ways to Get Rid of Fleas

Plant the pennyroyal herb around the doghouse. This herb will keep those insects away. You can also place them in the other outdoor locations your pet frequents.

Other pet owners like to bathe their pets with lemon scented liquid soaps. Cedar wood chips can also keep fleas away. You can put the chips outside your house or near the door.

Instead of using sprays on pets, you can apply essential oils instead. These include citronella, lavender and lemongrass. These don’t just kill the insects; the oils also heal the skin scarred by flea bites.

These oils can also be applied on people. Eucalyptus leaves are also used to keep fleas away from pets and your home. A few drops of eucalyptus oil mixed with water can also be used instead of a flea shampoo.

Neem

This is a natural shampoo suitable for dogs and cats. Aside from killing the fleas, this pet shampoo also has nutrients beneficial for the animal.

Nematodes and Non-Chemical Sprays

These are microscopic worms that consume the flea larvae. You can set these outside your home. This will prevent the pests from entering your house. Non-chemical sprays are made up of herbs fatal to fleas. Among the ingredients you can use peppermint oil, citronella, wormwood and rosemary.

These natural flea killers are all safe to use on your pets. Unlike the chemical based treatments, you don’t have to worry about any side effects on your pet or the people in the household.
