Fleas on humans can be removed and prevented using the following methods. However it is important that you treat your pet too, as they are the source of the infestation.

How to Treat Flea Bites

These bites are small, reddish and often very itchy. People usually get these on their ankles. The bites are very painful. Left untreated it can cause rashes and other skin ailments.

Reactions to flea bites vary per individual. Some will feel mild itching. Others will feel an intense itch and develop lesions.
To treat these bites, wash the reddish spot with water and antiseptic soap. Apply some ice packs or cold compress on the bite.

If the itch persists, apply calamine or hydro-cortisone lotions. These are OTC medications and available everywhere. You can also apply camphor or menthol to reduce the itching.

Do not scratch the bites because it will aggravate the wound. If there are bites all over the body, take a bath twice daily. It can relieve the itchiness.

You should wear socks as long as these pests are in the house. This will prevent them from getting to your ankles. You can also put insect repellants onto your clothing. Use repellants with contain diethyltoluamide (DEET). Again, these repellants are applied only to clothing, never to the skin.

How to Remove these Pests from the Home

Those fleas on humans and pets will remain there until you have taken steps to destroy them all. Remember that the cleaning of your home must be done at the same time you’re removing the fleas from your pet.

Gather all the clothes and sheets your pet sleeps on. Wash them in the washing machine. Wash your pet’s toys as well. If you see any small furniture or items with fleas, wash them too. Next, use a flea comb to remove any on your pet. Apply the spot-on treatment as indicated on the product guide.

Vacuum the corners of the house. Clean away any dust. These parasites prefer to hide in dark places, so focus there. Good places to seek them out are under your bed, upholstered furniture, floor boards and the basement. Rugs and carpets are also favorite hiding places of these things. Vacuum and wash them thoroughly.

Clean the Garden and Backyard

Remove any stagnant pools of water. Dispose of leaf piles. Arrange your stuff in the garden so there are no dark moist places where your pet plays. Clean its doghouse. Do not allow dirt to accumulate near the doghouse.

If the infestation persists, use a flea repellant with IGR. IGRs can be found in many types of flea products. You can also use foggers and flea bombs to get rid of these pests. There are also sprays for cats and dogs available.
