Flea shampoos are among the most effective tools for getting rid of those pests. There are many types of shampoos for dogs, so you need to be choosy about the brand you will buy. Some shampoos have various chemicals that may be harmful for your pet. Do not shampoo puppies or kittens without consulting your vet first.

Common Ingredients of These Shampoos

Most of these shampoos have pyrethrin, an insecticide comprised from chrysanthemum plant. Some shampoos have natural ingredients like citronella, juniper, eucalyptus, geranium and rosemary.

How to Use the Shampoo for Dogs

Step 1

Prepare the shampoo, cotton balls, flea comb, water and pure mineral oil.

Step 2

Read the shampoo instructions before using it.

Step 3

Put cotton balls in the dog’s ears. Place just a bit of sterile mineral oil into its eyes.

Step 4

Wet the fur well. Put the shampoo starting from the neck just around the head. Make sure there is a good lather. If needed, put on some more water.

Step 5

Make sure you work the coat well. Ensure the fur is separated as much as possible. This will permit the shampoo to reach the skin. If necessary, use the flea comb to get rid of all the fleas. Ensure the shampoo does not get to the eyes. Leave the shampoo on for as long as indicate in the product guide.

Step 6

Rinse it well.

Step 7

Keep using the flea shampoo for about two weeks. This will get rid of any fleas remaining on the dog.

How to Make Non Toxic Shampoos for Dogs

Method 1

Mix ½ cup of sodium lauryl sulfate in boiling water until it dissipates. Mix half a cup plus a couple of tbsp each of rosemary oil, peppermint oil, white cedar essential oil, ¼ cup white vinegar and ¼ cup citronella oil. Combine this with the sodium lauryl sulfate.

Method 2

Put the following into a pint of water: 10 drops of cedar wood oil, half a dozen lavender oil drops, ½ tablespoon of pure neem oil and 1 tbsp of olive oil. Put this in a spray bottle.

Method 3

Get some neem oil and mix it with some essential oils. The neem oil is a natural repellant against insects. The essential oils are used to conceal the smell of the neem oil.

Method 4

You can transform an ordinary pet shampoo to anti-flea product by putting neem oil in it (about a tbsp will be fine). The Dawn dishwashing liquid can also be used as a shampoo for puppies. You can also add piperonyl butoxide (a chemical enhancer) to the mix.

Tips and Warnings

Do not use shampoos for dogs on cats; some of the ingredients may be toxic to them. These animals have different physiologies, so different treatments are required by these animals.

Finally, you must remember flea shampoos for dogs and cats are only part of the treatment. You have to vacuum the house as well. This will ensure no more fleas will get on your pet.
