Flea powder is one of the products used to get rid of those pesky pests. These are sprayed on the carpet and after several hours or days are vacuumed. Some powder products however, are applied on the animal.

How the Powders Work

These powders are made with different chemicals, but their purpose is still the same: to destroy the flea eggs and larvae. This will terminate the flea life cycle and put an end to the infestation. The powders applied to pets are effective for as long as it is on the animal. These are applied on the back.

The powders that are spread on carpets are sold in different sizes. Their usage will vary, but many follow the basic process described earlier. If you plan to use this, take note of the size; it will determine how big an area it can cover.

A 5 lb canister for example, may be able to cover an area of 2000 square feet. To begin using, shake the container and spray onto the carpets. Get a broom and work it into the carpet. Some products will recommend you vacuum the rugs before the powder is applied. Refer to the instructions.

Tip: many of these products are sold with guarantees fleas won’t appear for a period of several months or a year. Keep the receipt with you. If the fleas come back, you can ask for a refund.

1 cup fennel
1 cup peppermint
1 cup rosemary
1 cup rue

Step 1

Grind the herbs and combine them. Keep grinding until the herbs become powdery like.

Step 2

Put the herbs in a bottle and apply a small amount on your pet.

Other Ways to Make Natural Powders

Ingredients

Dried herbs (dried rosemary, dried lavender, dried orange peels or dried lemon peels)
1 cup of baking soda
18 drops of citronella oil
1 cup of cornstarch

Step 1

Grind ¾ cup of one of the following: dried rosemary, dried lemon peels, dried lavender or dried orange peels. Grind the chosen herb in a blender.

Step 2

Put the dried herb in a plastic container. Put the citronella essential oil in it. Mix the herb and oil. Let this stand for a couple of hours.

Step 3

Spray this on your carpets. This can also be sprayed on furniture. Work the powder in your carpet using a broom. Leave the powder on the carpet for three hours at least.

Tips and Warnings

Do not use any of the ingredients if your pet is allergic to those herbs. If the animal shows adverse reactions, stop the usage of the application.

Many people prefer to use spot-on medications rather than flea powder. However there are still pet owners who believe that it is effective. If you are going to buy one, make certain you follow the instructions so those fleas are totally eliminated.
