A flea infestation will occur if these insects are not removed immediately. The methods described below will work, but it is recommended you begin the cleaning process as soon as flea presence is detected. A female flea can produce 200 eggs, hence the need for quick action.
What the Fleas Can Do
These creatures are not just unsightly and a nuisance; they can also be deadly. These insects feast on the blood of their host. If the kitten or puppy is weak, it will die from anemia.
These insects also have the larval stage of the tapeworm. This can lead to other health issues. As the fleas multiply, your pet will lose its hair and reddish marks appear all over its body.
These pests will also bite people. The bites are itchy and will leave a red mark on the skin. People with sensitive skin will suffer other skin problems too.
Removing Fleas from People and Pets
If you have gotten flea bites, apply skin lotion (hydro-cortisone) on the affected part. To prevent any more bites, put socks on for as long as the cleansing process is ongoing. There are many remedies for your pet.
The most popular are spot-on treatments. To use, just put a few drops onto the back of its neck or in-between its shoulder blades. There are other treatments available like collars, powders, shampoos, tablets, liquids and many more.
If you are getting confused as to which product to buy, consult your vet. Also remember that products are very specific. Do not use dog flea products on cats and vice versa.
How to Remove Flea Infestation in the House
Remove the flea eggs from the pet’s bedding. Look at the floor too, because some of the eggs end up there. Dispose of the eggs in soap and water. Vacuum the rugs and carpets. You should also vacuum under the sofa and seats.
You should also clean the area below the cushions. When the vacuum bag is full, put the contents in a trash bag. Repeat the vacuuming if there are any more fleas.
Don’t Forget to Clean the Yard
Use water and soap to clean the areas outside the house your pet frequents. Clean the doghouse every week if possible.
What are IGRs?
If the infestation continues, use a flea removal / killer with IGR. IGR stands for insect growth regulator. The IGR should also be present if you are going to use foggers or flea bombs.
Important: do not use the foggers or flea bombs near a fish tank; it will kill the fish. Follow the instructions and safety precautions as stated in the product.
Prevention
Once the infestation has been removed, take measures to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Apply the anti-flea medication on your pet regularly. Keep your home and garden clean too. Regular washing of pet bedding and playthings is recommended.
The real key to fighting a flea infestation is knowledge. By knowing the facts, you can take the right approach and dispose of these pests.
