Being able to apply the proper dog flea treatment is something every pet owner must know. It isn’t as simple as buying a flea product and applying it on the animal. You must know the indicators first.
Signs and Symptoms
The most common symptom is excessive scratching. In particular they will scratch at the tail and near the thighs. Flea dirt (actually flea feces) is also indicative these pests are present.
These look a lot like dirt, but there’s an easy way to determine if it belongs to a flea. Put a bit of water in a bowl and crush the dirt there. If it turns red, it’s flea dirt because they contain blood. These are usually found on the dog’s belly.
Dog Flea Collars
Dog collars are among the oldest methods used to get rid of fleas. They are available in many stores and at reasonable prices. While they can keep fleas away, these have fallen out of favor in recent years.
Studies show some collars have chemicals that could be detrimental to a dog’s health. Unless you’re certain of the collar’s quality, you’re better off with the other dog flea treatments.
Topical Flea Medication
These are available in pet stores. You can also get one from the veterinarian. To apply, place some drops between the dog’s shoulder blades. Put the drops under their fur, and it should keep those pesky fleas away.
The treatment has to be applied on a regular basis to prevent the fleas from appearing. Before you buy, be certain the topical treatment is apt for your dog’s weight and size. The frequency of application will vary per product. Read the package instructions to find out.
Flea Powders
These are among the most popular treatments available. Powder is simple to use. But you do need to be careful as it may cause the dog skin to dry up.
Oral Medications against Fleas
These medications can be bought from your vet. These products work by preventing the larvae from reproducing. This will terminate the cycle and stop the infestation. Ask your vet about the oral medications they can recommend for your pet. They will also tell you what the dosage should be.
Flea Combs
When you comb the dog with this, the fleas will get stuck to it. When the fleas are on the comb, dip it in a soap water bowl. This will kill the fleas, but it is time consuming. If you use this method, ensure you dispose of the soapy water properly.
Flea Shampoos
These are also effective when it comes to getting rid of these pests. The shampoo is best used if the fleas are still few in number. Important: make sure the label says it will kill, not just remove fleas. A flea-removing shampoo is only a temporary solution.
The best dog flea treatments are the topical medications, provided they are applied correctly. The flea shampoos also work well especially if the fleas are just emerging. Whichever method you choose, clean your pet and home regularly; that will help immensely.
